WICKED

Our 2 year anniversary is June 25th! Can you believe it, we’ve been married 2 years and we have a son that is 14 months…what a rush : )

Our anniversary celebration began June 21st. My husband surprised me 2-3 months ago with tickets to WICKED!!! Thursday was the BIG day, I waited patiently for the day, and it came with much excitement. I wanted to eat at a great restaurant near the Pantages but there was not enough time and parking, they were filming some movie, but that was besides the point because I was about to watch a play I’ve been waiting years for. So we get seated and it begins, my heart is thrilled. WICKED has been my 5th musical I’ve seen, 3 have been at the Pantages. This time it was extra special because I went with my husband, who has never seen a real musical (Curtain Call in Tustin was the closet) and it was for our anniversary. We both loved it and we were both satisfied with the performances.

One of the best parts of our night was discerning what the musical was saying, the Biblical errors, and the post modern thinking behind the musical.

It’s a blessing watching the play with discernment, my antennas went up every time I heard something postmodern or just plain biblical. One instance was when the Wizard is explaining to Elphaba that he is just someone that came to Oz to pick their spirits up because that’s what they needed, even if it meant lying to the people, he said something along the lines, that even if it is unreasonable (the suppose truth) it doesn’t matter because they believe it. Another occasion was when Fiyero sang and paraded the fact that he lives “the unexamined life” although, they portrayed him as not being happy with his motto.

I had a blast and all I can hear in my head is the different songs. I never wanted to hear the soundtrack until I watched the play but when I first found out PJ got tickets, I cheated and heard 8 songs…PJ was secretly sad that I didn’t wait to watch, so I sadly turned it off and gave back the CD, but now I can buy it and listen all day long (I will strive to glorify God as I sing at the top of my lungs like Eden Espinosa ; )
